Exfoliation is the shedding or peeling of dead skin cells from the top layer of your skin. It occurs naturally but the process slows down as we age. As we age, it becomes necessary to help the process along to reveal the new, radiant, younger looking skin that’s beneath the dead skin cells. To exfoliate my body, I like to use a body scrub, which is like exfoliating the face but for the entire body.
Benefits of using a body scrub
- Cleanses skin
- Removes dead skin
- Increases blood circulation
- Leaves more youthful looking skin. Otherwise, the dead skin cells gather and can leave skin looking and feeling dull.
Frequency To Exfoliate
I like exfoliating my body about once a week and it’s typically on the weekends when I have a little more time to spend caring for my skin. Once a week is good for my skin.
You may need to exfoliate more frequently or less frequently than me. Just remember there is a thing as over doing exfoliation, which can leave skin irritated, sensitive and possibly raw.
How to Make a Body Scrub
The body scrub recipe is super quick and easy to make and you only need 3 ingredients and a dish to store the body scrub in. Add and stir together
- 1 cup turbinado sugar (coarse texture)
- ¼ tablespoon coconut oil
- A few drops of essential oil for smell is optional
How to Exfoliate Your Body
Exfoliating your body is fairly simple but can be quite messy. After showering and while you’re still in the shower, rub about a tablespoon of body scrub in the palm of your hand and apply in a circular motion to your body. Rinse body scrub off and towel blot dry.
The Results of exfoliation on mature skin can be impressive
- Noticeably clearer and brighter skin
- Better skin hydration
- Improved efficacy of skin care products
- Skin remains moisturized longer
Quick tip: if you exfoliate before shaving you’ll have a closer shave because the dead skin cells are removed before shaving.
There is simply nothing like exfoliating the body, to keep skin looking as youthful as possible for as long as possible.
