Tips to Self Discovery of Your True Self

I’m looking inside me, discovering who I really am and the person I ultimately want to be when I grow up! As I said before, 2020 will be all about my journey to learning and discovering how to live my very best life. So, self-discovery is the mode I’m in.

Self-discovery is an amazing process that we all should embark on, to become a better person for ourselves and for our family and friends. It’s really about just looking inside of you to discover who you really are as a person. Growing those aspects you like and eliminating the ones you do not. Here are a few tips that can help you start a journey to self-discovery of your own.

1. Practice being quiet and becoming mindful by paying attention to yourself and your surroundings without focusing on your past or the future. Freeing yourself from the noise that surrounds you all day, every day and be intentionally quite for at least 10 or 15 minutes each day. Some people pray, meditate or just sit and be quite. You’ll be amazed how truly relaxed you can feel after just 15 minutes of quite time.

2. Ask yourself these questions, Who am I? What brings me joy? What am I afraid of? What do I want to accomplish? Be honest with yourself. Asking yourself questions is an effective way to hone in on who you are and what you really want.

3. Journaling your thoughts is a great way to reflect on where you are in life and focus on where you may want to go in the future. A couple of writing prompts to get you started are: Make a list of 30 things that make you smile; If you could talk to your teenage self, write what you would like to say; What do you love about life; List 30 things you are grateful for.

4. Practice self-care. Take time from your busy schedule to do things that make you happy and feel good.

5. Surround yourself with supportive people who encourage your journey to self-discovery. To grow into the best possible version of yourself, cling to those who support and eliminate those who bring you strife.

These are 5 tips that can help you start on a journey to self-discovery.

Now it’s your turn,

What do you do to find a little quite time to yourself?

Happy discovering!

I’m Taking Control of My Life…

“Taking control and becoming more disciplined.” is my theme for 2020.

To gain control of my life, I must become more disciplined by changing my habits and developing helpful routines. So, I’m starting a “Better Me” journey which will encompass health and fitness, goal setting, self care, entrepreneurial skills and more.

I would love to share my “Better Me” journey with you, here on my blog and on Youtube. I’ll share helpful tips and tricks that I learn along my journey that are helping me and can help you.

To start my journey of becoming a “Better Me”,

1. I’ll access where I am in life and the areas that I want to see change. An example is not having to frantically search for my car keys before work.

2. I’ll address those areas by making habit changes or routines. For my example, I’ll begin hanging my keys on the hook everyday, so I’ll know where the keys are when I’m ready to leave.

3. I’ll follow through with the habit and routine that I set up. If I say I’m going to get out of bed at 5 am to exercise then that’s what I’ll have to do. The follow through will get us every time.

4. I’ll leave room for changes. I don’t want to be so rigid in my new habit or routines that I can’t make changes along the way and then stress myself out or quit all together. If something works then stick to it, if not ditch it and develop new ways.

By sharing my journey with you, I’m being a little selfish, because I’m counting on being held accountable for my actions by you.

I’m on a journey…I’m not perfect but I’m striving for better. Thank you for joining me.

Relaxation Time! Epsom Salt Bath

Life is busy. Point. Blank. Period. Life is busy and we as women tend to take on so much responsibility for our families, careers and social organizations. Taking time to care for ourselves is often times placed on the to-do list and never get checked off. But we need learn to stop everything and take the time to care for us. When we make the decision to take care of self first, we become better all around. Destressing allows you to focus on letting everything go and become a better you.

I promised myself, that starting in 2019 I would choose me. One of my favorite ways to destress after a stressful day or one of those super long weeks is soaking in an Epsom salt bath to relax my mind and body. Soaking in this at-home detoxifying bath is both cheap and easy and you’ll find that all your pinned up tension, stress and anxiety will all melt away.

Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate. An epsom bath provides a soothing soak for your body and helps your muscles to relax, as some of the magnesium is absorb through your skin. Epsom salt also raises the water’s specific gravity, which makes the body more buoyant, and you feel light and floaty as you relax.

To enhance your experience, dim the light, light a candle and add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to help you fully de-stress and relax.

At-Home Epsom Salt Bath

  • 2 cups epsom salts
  • Optional: 5-10 drops your favorite essential oil.
    • Lavender to relax
    • Peppermint to energize
    • eucalyptus to build your immune system
  • Add ingredients to a full, warm or hot bathtub and soak for 20 minutes. Take this time to truly relax and breathe deeply.
  • Lay down afterwards and have a peaceful night of sleep. The best night sleep ever for me!

Soak for 20 minutes to allow the epsom salts to pull the toxins from your pores, but no more than 20 minutes as you risk re-absorbing the impurities.

My April Audio Book Picks

The Easy Rawlins series by Walter Mosley is my absolute favorite mystery series of all times. So not suggesting the first book in the series, Devil in a Blue Dress, would be sacrilege.

Set in the late 1940s, in the African-American community of Watts, Los Angeles, Devil in a Blue Dress follows Easy Rawlins, a black war veteran just fired from his job at a defense plant. Easy is drinking in a friend’s bar, wondering how he’ll meet his mortgage, when a white man in a linen suit walks in, offering good money if Easy will simply locate Miss Daphne Monet, a blonde beauty known to frequent black jazz clubs.

This book has many twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you swooning over Easy! His debonair and cool style mixed with roughness that can make anyone spill the beans. Start with the first book in the series and work your way through all fourteen books. Trust me, you won’t regret it!

If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin is a definitely a book to revisit since the release of the movie adaptation! In this honest and stunning novel, James Baldwin has given America a moving story of love in the face of injustice. Told through the eyes of Tish, a 19-year-old girl in love with Fonny, a young sculptor who is the father of her child, Baldwin’s story mixes the sweet and the sad.

Tish and Fonny have pledged to get married, but Fonny is falsely accused of a terrible crime and is imprisoned. Their families set out to clear his name, and as they face an uncertain future, the young lovers experience a kaleidoscope of emotions – affection, despair, and hope.

In a love story that evokes the blues, where passion and sadness are inevitably intertwined, Baldwin has created two characters so alive and profoundly realized that they are unforgettably ingrained in the American psyche.

The Power to Prosper by Michelle Singletary is an awesome book for anyone seeking to align their money with biblical principles and promises. The book teaches you practical ways to financial freedom by putting you on a 21-day financial fast, where you are prohibited from using credit cards and cannot buy anything unless it is a basic need for survival. You’ll experience something even more amazing…your faith and generosity will increase, too.

Any habit can be broken or started in just 21 days! Just trust the process.

On the Come Up by Angie Thomas is a young adult book that deals with many of the issues that we deal with on a daily basis.

Sixteen-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Or at least get some streams on her mixtape.

As the daughter of an underground rap legend who died right before he hit big, Bri’s got massive shoes to fill. But when her mom unexpectedly loses her job, food banks and shut-off notices become as much a part of Bri’s life as beats and rhymes.

With bills piling up and homelessness staring her family down, Bri no longer just wants to make it – she has to make it.

We’re Going to Need More Wine by Gabrielle Union is a moving collection of thought-provoking essays infused with her unique wisdom and deep humor! Union tells astonishingly personal and true stories about power, color, gender, feminism, and fame. Union tackles a range of experiences, including bullying, beauty standards and competition between women in Hollywood, growing up in white California suburbia and then spending summers with her black relatives in Nebraska, coping with crushes, puberty, and the divorce of her parents. Genuine and perceptive, Union bravely lays herself bare, uncovering a complex and courageous life of self-doubt and self-discovery with incredible poise and brutal honesty. Throughout, she compels us to be ethical and empathetic and reminds us of the importance of confidence, self-awareness, and the power of sharing truth, laughter, and support.

This is an awesome collection of books for you to explore. There’s a mystery to get your heart pumping, Christian philosophies to get your finances straight, a young adult to make you thankful for not being young anymore (lol), a classic fiction love story to help your stretch out on the recliner to read and a funny memoir to help you laugh out loud!

Fingernail Polish Color Trends for Mature Hands

Rocking a hot nail color is my thing! I love having fun with my nails and trying new colors and age doesn’t set any boundaries for me. However, there are a few things I like to keep in mind when selecting a color for my manicure, since my hands are starting to show some hints of aging.

Our hands are the first to show signs of aging but I want my hands to look as youthful as possible for as long as possible! These are a few color considerations that I follow when I pick my manicure color!

Favorite color

I am always drawn to choosing my favorite color, which is pink, for my manicure. There are so many variations of pink that can keep me stocked at all times. If you have a favorite lipstick color then I’m sure there are nail polish colors that will match your favorite color as well. You know which color looks great on your skin, so I say start with that color. For me, it’s pink! Did I say that already?!?!

Bright and fun colors

I love wearing bright and fun colors because they are youthful looking colors and the nail polish brings the attention to my manicure rather than my hands.

Some bright youthful looking colors to choose from are

  • Bright pinks in any shade
  • Bright Reds, which include red, burgundy and plum nail polishes
  • Bright Orange, even an orange-red

Nudes for sure

Nude nail polish colors are a must for their anti-aging power. Every woman should have a nude polish in her stash that pairs with a favorite foundation color.

  • If you have light skin, choose shades of white, champagne, nude or sand
  • If you have darker skin, choose shades of cocoa, cappuccino, taupe or coffee

Grays and browns

I love cement gray but don’t necessarily care for browns on my fingers. However, brownish grey can be trendy and youthful looking. Lighter grays, browns and milk chocolate can be super cute and fun looking and not be as flashy as bright colors.

Corals, peaches and translucent

Coral orange, peach colors and translucent pinks elongate fingers and give a fresh appeal to your manicure.

Glitter and shimmer

A hint of shimmer or glitter can add intrigue and add some versatility to a manicure. A light glitter can accent your main polish color to add fun to your manicure.

These are some awesome fingernail polish colors that can bring life to any manicure and help our hands appear as youthful as possible for as long as possible by diverting attention away from our aging hands.

I Choose Me

I choose me.

That statement can mean a lot of different things to each of us. Sometimes, I just sit and ponder on it.

I choose me.

It’s important to choose because our families, significant others, children and careers can be so demanding on our time and minds that we can fall into the background of our own lives. Continue reading I Choose Me

Gorgeous Nails for Women over 40

Grooming becomes more important and more time allowable to us as we mature. We have more time to focus on looking our very best, as most our children are older and don’t need us as much and our careers are at a place that’s manageable (I hope so anyway. Fingers crossed). We seem to have more time to put that extra final touch to our appearance, and having gorgeous nails can top off any look. Continue reading Gorgeous Nails for Women over 40

You’re Not Too Old – It’s Not Too Late

Once we’ve devoted our lives entirely to our family and our careers, we can sometimes feel like those dreams we used to revel in have passed us by because we lack the same amount of energy that we use to have to run after our dreams. Somewhere down the road we become complacent and satisfied with the good enough and it becomes super easy to say I’m too old to make my dream a reality or it’s too late, my time is gone.
