I Choose Me

I choose me.

That statement can mean a lot of different things to each of us. Sometimes, I just sit and ponder on it.

I choose me.

It’s important to choose because our families, significant others, children and careers can be so demanding on our time and minds that we can fall into the background of our own lives. We as women tend to be the nurturers, the care givers, the smoothers, the make-everything-all-righters and we do this often times sacrificing our own happiness, our choice, our strength and even our mental and physical health.

We can drown under the pressures of being everything for everyone. Unless we take control and prioritize with us in the forefront of our lives.

To Love your neighbor as yourself, you must first love yourself! To me, loving yourself means taking care of yourself spiritually, mentally and physically, first. Then and only after then, can you love and care for others. It’s not selfish to see about yourself first. For me, I choose me, means I choose to be happy, I choose to be healthy, I choose to prioritize my time, my energy and my actions with me in the forefront. Nothing in choosing me, negates the importance of anyone else in my life. In all actuality, I’m a better nurturer, care giver, smoother and make-everything-all-righter because I’m not feeling slighted or feeling any kind of resentment while helping others. Because I know I’ve done what needed to be done for me.

To choose yourself,

Take a few minutes each morning to sit and be quite. You may have to get up a little before the hustle and bustle starts in your house. You’ll learn to love that time alone. Use the time to talk to God, pray, meditate or just be quite. You may find it helpful to keep a journal on hand, just in case you get a break out idea.

Keep a to-do list, to write down the things that are important to you, to accomplish that day. Sometimes you just have to stop everything and do what’s on your list. Like stop and make an appointment to the doctor for that nagging pain you’ve been feeling and worrying about for days or even weeks.

Say no. One of the hardest things that I’m learning is to say no and to say no without feeling guilty that I’m letting someone down. It’s ok to say no. With no explanation and no added words. (Ok you can say, No, I can’t do that for No I can’t show up, If you want.) But No lying, no excuses, just a simple no will do, if you can’t do it.

Give your kids the tools to do tasks themselves. Teach your kids to wash and fold clothes, to wash dishes, clean and everyday tasks. You don’t have to do everything and know everything. Give them the website Google.com to look up instructions and to answer the trivial questions they call you with. Trust me Google knows all the answers.  

Take care of your body, Jim Rohn said it best, “Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” When you take care of your body by eating clean, moving more and getting proper sleep. You’ll wake refreshed, have more energy and feel great throughout the day. You will thank yourself for taking care of your body.

Give yourself permission to put you first. It takes work when you’re so familiar with placing yourself on the back burner but I promise you, you will thank yourself later. Say it with me, I choose me!
